Workshops

A line drawing of a pegasus in flightWe have a full slate of workshops for you to choose from this year!

Throughout the weekend enjoy

Chamberfilk - Phil Textor will gather together all the orchestra instruments he can find and meld them into a cohesive unit over the course of two short days. He will meet with all interested folks at the Mad Hatter's Tea Parry Friday evening, hold a rehearsal on Saturday and Sunday morning, then on Sunday afternoon the chamber orchestra will peform orchestrated versions of two or three filk songs. If you're interested or have any questions, contact Phil at textorpmt at yahoo dot com.

On Friday evening we present

Melodic and Non-Guitar Accompaniment - Amy McNally, Mary Crowell, and Debbie Ohi will strive to provide some examples of and ideas about how to accompany songs using instruments other than guitars, with a strong emphasis on melody instruments.

Inobtrusive Percussion - There is percussion that gives a song structure, that lifts it up and takes the audience along with it. There is also percussion that takes the audience hostage, pummels it soundly, and leaves it for dead at the edge of the filkroom. Sally Childs-Helton and Debbie Gates have kindly agreed to teach you to be more like the first example rather than the second. Because teaching you to be the second would, you know, be a bit of a dirty trick.

Saturday's workshops include

Yoga – YogaFit is dedicated to bringing the practice of yoga to all populations in a safe and user-friendly, fitness format. YogaFit makes the physical and mental health benefits of traditional yoga accessible to people of all ages and walks of life.

Beading - Kathleen Sloan will provide a lovely 2-hour introduction to Beading on Saturday morning.

Self-Hypnosis - James Hazlerig (Cedrick of Bedlam Bards) happens, by day, to teach people to use self-hypnosis to overcome stage fright and enhance performance. In this once-in-a-lifetime, two-hour-long workshop he will bring the amazing power of his mind to help you harness the amazing power of YOUR mind!

Promote Your Own Music - Tom Smith and The Amazing Sooj (aka S.J. Tucker) will share with you their experiences and insights into ways to best promote your own music.

Gaining Confidence Performing - Debbie, Allison, and Jodi of Urban Tapestry will present a workshop on gaining confidence performing in the filk environment. Strategies for becoming integrated with the community, working up to concert performances, and advice on performance in open filk circles.

Lyric Writing - Bob Kanefsky will provide a series of exercises in parody writing, and suggest things to think about/focus on when when writing parodies.

Understanding Melodic Structure - Understanding how melodies tend to work helps you to figure out the chords, appropriate melodic accompaniments, or simply to learn the tune by ear. Mary Bertke will present this workshop on Music Theory 100.5 (not quite as involved as 101).

Lead and Follow/Intro to Jamming - Barry Childs-Helton will present this workshop to help you learn to follow along in a jam session situation.

Stargazing - Peter Alway is bringing his telescope and will be turning it on the wide open night sky. Come bedazzle your eyes with some of the wonders of the heavens above.

On Sunday you can indulge again in

Morning Yoga - Limber up and relax before a long day of dodging puns, reaching for high notes, and other strenuous activities. Nothing energizes a sleep deprived body like an hour of yoga!
