Open Filking at OVFF
There is always AT LEAST one
room reserved for open filking during the entirety of the con.
Friday & especially Saturday evenings this expands enormously, and it is not
uncommon for over 6 different open filks to be going on
For those who wish to tape at open filking, please read the OVFF Taping Policy on the Concerts page.
Fetal Puppy Filk
There will be an Fetal Puppy Filk on Thursday night.
This gives members who arrive a day early the chance to gather with other
filkers and unwind from their travels and to sing and listen before the
hustle and bustle of the convention begins in earnest.
OVFF schedules a few open filks to have a particular theme, usually based on the predisposition of one or more of the Honored Guests. At themed filks, songs are expected to fit the theme in some manner. Whether a song fits the theme is often a matter of how creative the person wanting to perform (or hear) that song is in rationalizing how the song fits.
Along with the scheduled themed filks, some time slots are set aside for member-selected themed filks, where the theme is decided by someone who signs up for the slot at the registration table.
Moon Wink & Serenade
Friday night we are planning a special outdoors filk to honor the memory of Neil Armstrong, the first man on the moon. Bring your best songs about the moon, the Apollo missions, and space exploration in general to this filksing out under the stars. Peter Alway will be bringing his telescope so everyone can take a close-up and personal look at the man in the moon and give him a wink in honor of Neil as we howl, er, sing at the full moon.
Vagabond 'Verse Filk
For all of you who feel the lure of the open sky, we offer the Vagabond 'Verse Filk hosted by Bari & Cat Greenberg. In the immortal words of Jack Kerouac "there is nowhere to go but everywhere, keep rolling under the stars..."
Shallow End Filk
If you are new to performing, now's your chance to get your toes wet in the Shallow End Filk led by Cat Faber & Mark Bernstein. No commitment required; lifeguards available; guaranteed shark-free!
Cover Me Filk
GOH Katy Dröge-Macdonald will be moderating the Cover Me Filk where the idea is to sing not your own song, but a song written by someone else in the room
As a convenience for our attendees who are parents, we have reserved the room right next to door to Kid Space for this open filk. The kids can hang out in Kid Space which is stocked with videos, games, toys, and books while literally two steps down the hall parents can sing the night away. We ask that parents help by taking a short turn in Kid Space (30 minutes) keeping an eye on the kids.
Traditional Midwest Chaos
This is the most common form of Open Filk at OVFF, and for the most part, in the midwestern United States, or at least anywhere near the Great Lakes. At a chaos filk, anything goes. You have a follower? Sing it! You want to change the mood? Go for it! Of course, it's best to be polite about it. Don't jump in too often, or continually go against the mood of the room, but beyond that, there really are no fixed rules.
Most of the all-night open filks are chaos filks.
Dead Dog Open Filk
After the convention is officially over and you've had something to eat on Sunday evening, it is time to get back to the business of singing until the last person leaves for home, falls asleep mid-refrain, or is carried off to bed. In recent years, this has gone on past 5:00am! (The record is 8:30am.)
Many people consider this to be the best open filking of the entire convention each year, so it's worth sticking around for if you can.
