In My Garden

by Ed Chamberlain
for OVFF Song Contest of 1996
Theme: First Contact
(Placed 2nd)

I found you in my garden among the flowers fair -
Your sweet aroma lingered on the sultry summer air.
You trembled when I touched you - I should not have been so bold;
Then you touched me with your mind, and I could feel your thoughts unfold.

Chorus:
I'm in love with a slime-mold from Deneb,
My love is from a bright and distant star.
I don't care if they call me demented -
I love you, Darling, just the way you are.

You told me how you fled your world in a vessel made of stone,
How you drifted on for eons in the universe alone.
You plummeted from heaven, when your life-force had grown low,
And you landed in my garden, where you found a place to grow.

Chorus

Some people may not understand the tender love we share,
And the way we've grown together tends to make them stop and stare.
With you I'm never lonely and we live in harmony,
For a telepathic slime-mold can be perfect company.

Chorus

In my garden we still keep a watch for your comrades from the sky,
And hope that you can contact them as their stone-ships hurtle by,
And guide them to this planet, to my garden here below,
Where we can build a perfect world, where your race and mine can grow.

Final Chorus:
Then you all could love slime-molds from Deneb,
You all could feel connected to that star,
And nobody would call you demented,
'Cause everyone would be the way you are.
