Barbership is a German-Canadian-American quartet consisting of Eva Van Daele-Hunt (Soprano), Katy Dröge-Macdonald (Alto), Steve Macdonald (Tenor), and Rafael Van Daele-Hunt (Bass). Just how did these folks find each other?
The Place: Central Germany. It was a very intimate event, with under 25 attendees. We cooked for ourselves, had bonfires out the back... it was idyllic. Except for the flies. And a rogue barbershopper who spontaneously filked the standard barbershop tune 'Fly Away' to something more... appropriate for flocks of flying chitin. Steve grabbed his wife Katy along with Eva & Rafael and taught them the new words and parts: "There's a fly on me / In the kitchen..." They found that this was an entertaining in-joke, but maybe not all that presentable to audiences Not At That Con, which led them to filking their first barbershop song together; called 'Fly Away' (no relation whatsoever to the barbershop song of the same name and... well... tune). This was so much fun that the four of them chose to make it a semi-permanent thing; and Eva started filking Steve's moderately extensive barbershop music collection, as well as other four part acappella styles (vocal jazz and 20's era German vaudeville among them). Their first 'hit', 'Tell Me Why' (no relation whatsoever to the old barbershop chestnut 'Tell Me Why'- they just sound amazingly similar) prompted no less than 3 filks, including Eva filking a filk she herself had originally filked. On one of the early visits to Hamburg to cement this group, the problem of a name came up. Several ideas were batted around (most from Steve, and all terrible). Rafael noted the old saw, "... if filk is just folk for very narrow values of the letter "o", then 'barberSHOP' would become 'BarberSHIP'... and the group was born. In the end, Barbership has been one of the best- kept secrets in German filk until they all showed up at OVFF 40 in 2024 on the first (and only) stop of their North American tour :)
