Edwin Brady is a Computer Science academic by day, and if he's honest, by night too, although he's always dabbled in music in his Copious Free Time. And then... something happened in March 2020 (can anyone remember what?) that made him pick up a ukulele and start writing whimsical folk songs on a variety of topics like science, technology, zombies, games and baked goods. Since then, he hasn't been able to stop himself, and somewhat inevitably this led him to the filk community where he's been actively participating in both online and in-person events ever since. He'll be the one surrounded by ukuleles, maybe bashing away at the piano, or making a racket on one of his harmonicas (or, as he likes to call them, "the Devil's bagpipes"), occasionally even doing so in the right key.

He occasionally performs alongside Marilisa Valtazanou and Robert Beckwith as the Pensive Teapots, and releases music under the name Lambda Miners, which you can find on Bandcamp. He was a GoH at the UK Filk Con in 2025.

He funds his ukulele habit by teaching and researching programming language technology at a university in Scotland. He once perpetrated the Whitespace programming language and is still trying to live it down. He believes that the experience gained doing these things has directly transferred to performing filk, but has still not been brave enough to take a ukulele to class. Yet.

When he's not doing any of these things, there's a good chance he'll be out exploring the world with a tube of Factor 50, a pair of sturdy shoes, a flapjack in his knapsack and a can of Irn Bru.

Half Way Around the Sun (Listen!)

The last time that I saw them it was not a pretty sight
Fallout and scandals, and the customary fights
Even I could tell you that was not the hand of God
I could barely watch

They sent a crew to meet me, but they never made it home
Now I travel through the blackness, decades on my own
I've gone as far as I can go, it's time that I returned
To see what my friends have learned

I hope it's going well, and I hope they're having fun
I look forward to my visit when it's 2061
I wonder what has happened, what humankind has done
While I'm half way around the Sun

They thought I was an omen when they saw me overhead
I filled the Anglo Saxons with a sense of fear and dread
Witnessing the battle, like each time before and since
Wondering who really wins

But every time I come around, I see the steps they made
Maybe there is hope and there's no need to be afraid
So it's time that I went back again for just another try
A mysterious light in the sky

I hope it's going well, and I hope they're having fun
I look forward to my visit when it's 2061
I wonder what has happened, what humankind has done
While I'm half way around the Sun

It's time to turn around
You're not going to let me down

I hope it's going well, and I hope you're having fun
I look forward to my visit when it's 2061
I wonder what has happened, what humankind has done
While I'm half way around the Sun

I hope that you are happy and I hope you live in peace
I look forward to the progress that I'm surely going to see
I wonder if I'll celebrate what humankind achieved
When I was half way around the Sun
